HOUSTON — In the nearly two and a half years since the 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck south-central Alaska and wrecked structures across the state, the Matt Sue Borough District will begin construction of a new high school in Houston. The condemned and demolished old Houston Middle School building will be the new location for Houston High School.
The groundbreaking ceremony will take place on July 15 at 11 a.m. on Hawk Lane. The new building will contain specific areas for teaching construction trades, welding, cooking and other vocational education. There will be 11 general classrooms with four resource classrooms and three science laboratories, as well as three vocational and technical education laboratories.
Mat-Su Borough received funding from the Federal Emergency Management Agency in May after speculation about how to pay for construction of the building, which will cost about $34 million.
