On any given night, the star of the angels, Shohei Utani, will go down in history. Friday night was Ohtani’s last display of record-setting power, as his two home outfits dazzled against the Orioles at Angel Stadium. But it was his speed on the core tracks that provided the 8-7 win over the Orioles.
With the game tied at 7, Jared Walsh hit a linear drive into Ohtani’s shallow right field to score with difficulty from second base. Otani started the half with a solo career and then stole his 13th base of the season on the first pitch at Walsh Stadium.
Ohtani led the third inning with his 29th home run of the season, giving him the most number of home runs before the All-Star break in Angels history. As night rolls in, it has been tied to teammate Mike Trout’s 2018 number of 28.
Homer Ohtani cut first of the night Baltimore’s four-stroke lead as he connected on the first pitch of the bat and drove the four-stud fastball into the right midfield at the Statcast’s projected 416 feet with an exit speed of 104.5 mph.
The 26-year-old dazzler mashed his second long ball of the night on his third bet, this time with the opposite field force. Homer’s 400-foot tall gave Los Angeles the lead, and David Fletcher was at the start, achieving another historic feat.
Otani became the first MLS player to score 30 home runs and 10 stolen bases in his team’s first 81 games of the season. Sammy Sosa (Chicago, 1998) and Albert Pujols (St. Louis, 2009) are the only other two players to achieve this feat.
Throughout Ohtani’s illustrious career, he has often been compared to baseball legend Babe Ruth, who was also a two-way player. Ruth set a record in 1919 with the most home runs (29) in a season with no fewer than 10 games. Otani broke the 100-year-old’s record with 12 appearances and 30 wrecks for hallucinogens this season.
