When EA Sports announced earlier this year that it would bring back the long-running dead-end soccer series, there were many questions – most notably, “How?” The series went dormant in 2013 as a result of the original 2009 lawsuit filed over the ability of NCAA athletes to cash in on their looks. While the developers originally intended to use custom characters instead of actual players, that plan may change as a result of Wednesday’s Supreme Court ruling that the NCAA cannot prevent players from taking advantage of their likeness.
EA Sports issued a statement to Axios on Thursday indicating that it may adjust its plans as a result of the NCAA finally allowing players to accept endorsements and profit from their name, likeness and likeness. “We are closely monitoring recent developments regarding the name, image and likeness of the student athlete,” a company representative told Axios. “It’s still very early days at this point, and we plan to explore the possibility of including players in EA Sports College Football.
When the game was announced in February, the company said that while it had obtained licenses to use more than 100 schools in the soccer subdivision, it would use randomly generated players and numbers to populate the teams. The game is also set on a toolkit that allows users to create their own players, giving you a casual way to include your favorite college football players.
I can’t imagine they are still going that route now that they can use players directly. EA Sports previously said the game wouldn’t release until summer 2022, and given how long college football fans have been waiting for this game, I’m sure they wouldn’t mind waiting a little longer if it meant they could actually go out with some of their favorite athletes.
Now, let’s just hope that this game is even better than what the Madden series has become recently.
