Wakefield (CBS) – Interstate 95 in Wakefield was closed due to a confrontation between Massachusetts State Police and a group of heavily armed men Saturday morning. The men claim to be part of a group called “The Rise of The Moors – The Moorish American Arms.”

The group claims that they are US citizens but not US citizens. They have a Moroccan flag.

The standoff stems from an accident hours earlier where a soldier stopped on I-95 to help two cars parked in a crash lane. State police said it appeared that the two cars were refueling, but the officer quickly noticed that eight to ten people were in full military uniform. They were armed with long rifles and pistols. The officer asked for driver’s licenses and the proper license for the guns but they didn’t provide any.

They were allegedly traveling from Rhode Island to Maine with camping equipment for training.

This is not a well known group. They’re not on the radar of large-scale law enforcement agencies across the country, but they are now, said WBZ security expert and former Boston Police Commissioner Ed Davis.

The leader of the group was broadcasting live on social media during the incident. He said the group was not anti-government, anti-police or sovereign citizens.

“These people have hijacked social media, and mainstream media in Massachusetts, to spread their word,” Davis said. “It’s very unusual – unless the group has a plan; unless the group thinks of integrating into the public landscape. If that is their plan today, they achieve that goal.”

The group, along with the police, said they wanted to end the confrontation peacefully.
