ATLANTA (AFP) – The young Marine captain needed a date one evening while he was home from the US Naval Academy, so his younger sister paired him with a family friend who was already a fan.
Nearly eight decades later, Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter are still together in the same small town where they were born, raised and had their first outing. In between, they have traveled the world as a naval officer and military spouse, an American president and first lady, and finally as ambassadors for human rights and public health.
“It’s a complete partnership,” the 39th president told the Associated Press during a joint interview ahead of the couple’s 75th wedding anniversary on July 7.
It would be another milestone for the longest-running married presidential couple in American history. At 96 years old, Carter is also the longest-lived of the 45 men who have served as CEO. Yet even after he reached that summit, Carter said repeatedly since leaving the Oval Office in 1981 that the most important decision he had ever made was not head of state, commanding general, or even CEO of a nuclear submarine in the early years of the Cold War.
Instead, it was easy for Eleanor Rosalynn Smith in 1945 and he married her the following summer. “My biggest secret is getting married to the right person if you want to have a long-term marriage,” Carter said.
Offer singles – now 93 – some other advice for a lasting relationship.
“Every day there is a need for reconciliation and communication between spouses,” said the former president, explaining that he and Rosalyn, both devout Christians, read the Bible aloud together every night—something they did for years, even as they separated through their travels. “We don’t sleep with some differences left between us,” he said.
Rosalynn Carter pointed out the importance of finding common interests. So far, she’s said, “Jimmy and I are always looking for things to do together.” However, she emphasized a warning: “Everyone (person) should have some space. This is really important.”
As First Lady, Rosalynn Carter carved her identity even as she supported her husband. Building on the efforts of her predecessors to highlight private causes, she went to work in her office in the East Wing, where she set a standard for first ladies by working alongside her husband’s assistants in the West Wing on key legislation, particularly dealing with health care and mental health. I continued this focus when the couple built the Carter Center in Atlanta years after the White House.
The couple certainly admits, that the 75-year marriage wasn’t smooth sailing.
Initially on his way to being an admiral, not commander in chief, Rosalyn has valued their lives outside the Plains, home to less than a thousand people, then and now. But when James Earl Carter Sr. fell ill and died in 1953, his son cut short his career in the Navy and decided the family would return to rural Georgia.
The ex-president wrote that later, he found it unreasonable not to discuss such a life-changing decision with his wife, who was dissatisfied with the move. Now, they see their partnership blossoming at this difficult juncture.
“We developed a partnership when we were in farm supply, and it lasted when Jimmy got involved in politics,” Rosalynn Carter told The Associated Press. “I knew more about working on paper than he did,” she added, laughing and emphasizing her husband.
Nor did Jimmy Carter seek permission from Rosalynn to make his first offer of a position a few years later. In that case, she was on board anyway.
“My wife is much more political,” he said.
She interjected, “I love him. I love campaigning. I had the best time. I’ve been to all the states in the US. I campaigned hard every day the last time we ran.”
It didn’t help avoid defeating Republican Ronald Reagan in 1980. But it did solidify Rosalynn—who had originally given up her chance to go to college when she married at 18—as an equal partner to the Liberty Leader. Globalism. He marked the evolution of Jimmy Carter as a husband.
He has since been an outspoken voice for women’s rights, including within Christianity. Carter left the Southern Baptist Convention in 2006, denouncing what he called “rigid” views that “subjugated” women in the church and in their marriages.
The former president endorsed these views again, as well as his support for the church that recognizes same-sex marriage. “It will continue to divide,” he said. “But the church is evolving.”
Carter plans to celebrate their wedding anniversary a few days after their anniversary with a party in Plains. After decades of inaugural parties and state dinners, Sumter County’s most famous resident said they had mixed feelings about the spotlight.
“A lot of people were invited,” Rosalynn Carter said with a laugh. “I’m actually praying for some regression and regret.”
