“During last year’s lockdown, I lost my job and around the same time my daughter, who got married and settled in Kolkata, was in an advanced stage of pregnancy. I had to move to Kolkata to take care of my daughter and due to the lockdown I could not leave the city. Since my daughter had a baby, My wife and I live on the street as there is not enough space for us in the room where our daughter and son-in-law live.
It was then that he started playing music to make ends meet. The local police in the city’s Borutola district have provided him with a place to stay for the time being.
“Mali told us that he started playing in the streets to arrange food for himself and his wife. Whatever he saved was spent buying baby food and fruit for the baby and the mother. However, disaster struck again and Mali’s violin fell off the damage two weeks ago,” a police officer at Portola Police Station said two weeks ago. That was when Burotolla Police – and later the Community Policing Wing – decided to intervene.
Kolkata Police Commissioner Sumin Mitra was so impressed with Mali that he gifted him a violin on Monday under a community policing scheme.
“I met Mr. Bhagwan Mali, who is a very talented musician. A few weeks ago, a video of him playing his violin in the city streets went viral on social media. Last week, he received financial assistance from our Community Police wing. Today @/CPkolkata gifted him a new violin. “.
Director Raj Chakraborty, also Trinamool Congress MLA from Barrackpore, noticed Mali playing the violin for the first time on June 21 in Beadon Street and Girish Park. Impressed with his music, Chakraborty reached out to the local MLA and Minister Sachi Banga and arranged for him his food and medicines.
A video clip went viral online showing Chakraborty talking to Mali and offering him a chance in his movie. Chakraborty is also planning to give Mali a chance to present his upcoming reality music shows.
Mali, who has so far refused any financial assistance saying he will only accept the money after the performance, was provided with a roof over his head in Burotolla by the police.
“We have arranged some performances for him in some of the leading hotels and restaurant chains in the city. He has been performing for one week,” a senior Kolkata police officer said.
If you walk through the intersection of Beadon Street and Girish Park, you may also hear the magical tunes of ‘Diwana Hua Baadal’ by Asha Bhosli and Muhammad Rafi from the 1964 movie ‘ Kashmir ki Kali’ and Lata Mangeshkar ‘Ajeeb dastan hai yeh’ from the movie ‘Diwana Hua Baadal’. 1960’s ‘Dil Apna Aur Preet Parai’ floats through the empty streets of North Kolkata.
This octogenarian man sitting on the sidewalk with his violin arranging food for his granddaughter will surely make everyone forget the harshest facts with his magical tunes.
