“So far, we are aware that fewer than 60 of Cassie’s customers, who were all using the local VSA product, were directly compromised by this attack,” Cassie said. “Although many of these clients provide IT services to many other companies, we understand the total impact to date on fewer than 1,500 downstream companies. We found no evidence that any of the [cloud] Customers have been hacked.
Cassie also said she met with the FBI and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency Monday night “to discuss requirements to strengthen systems and networks prior to restoring service to both.” [cloud] and local customers. A set of requirements will be posted before the service restarts to give our customers time to put these countermeasures in place in anticipation of returning to service on the 6th of July.”
The REvil malware infected a wide range of IT management companies and led to the hacking of hundreds of their corporate clients late last week.
Cyber security experts said the gang of cybercriminals, believed to operate from Eastern Europe or Russia, targeted software vendor Kaseya, whose products are widely used by IT management firms.
Kaseya CEO Fred Fukulla said in an interview with Reuters on Monday that it is difficult to gauge the full impact of the attack, but the company believes that between 800 to 1,500 companies around the world have been affected. REvil Group has demanded that it pay $70 million in Bitcoin for a decryption tool for business data recovery.
In an interview with Reuters, Fukola did not say whether Cassie would pay the pirates. “There is no comment on anything related to negotiating with terrorists in any way,” he told Reuters.
Fukula also told Reuters he was not aware of any nationally important organizations that were infiltrated in the attack. “We’re not looking at massive critical infrastructure,” he said. “It’s none of our business. We don’t operate the AT&T network or the Verizon 911 system. Nothing like that.”
