Georgia golf shooting: Police still searching for suspect, club ‘thriving’ under slain pros: Reports

A manhunt was still underway in Georgia early Tuesday for a suspect who shot and killed a professional golfer at Pinetree Country Club, in Cobb County, Atlanta, on Saturday afternoon.

The suspect was said to have driven a pickup truck onto the green of the golf course’s 10th hole and was confronted by a professional, Eugene Siler, reports said. That’s when the suspect shot Sealer, who was found with an apparent gunshot wound to the head, authorities told FOX 5 of Atlanta.

The suspect was described as being 6 feet tall, long hair, and wearing a white or light-colored shirt and dark work pants.

It was not clear when law enforcement officers found the truck – which was found in the Green Zone – but police said two more bodies were found in the bed of the car, according to the station.

Both men had obvious gunshot wounds and one of them was identified as Paul Pearson, the registered owner of the truck. Police said the other victim has yet to be identified.

One golfer described hearing disturbances on Saturday.

John Lavender told FOX 5, “I was in driving range, and I heard about the truck in the track, so I went to see what was going on. Suddenly I heard five or six explosions.”

Sealer joined Pinetree as manager of golf in September 2019. The pro was on the 10th hole Saturday afternoon to look into a report of an unauthorized pickup truck driving down the course, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Coach Corey Evans said the course has been “thriving” under him.

“The cycle is booming,” Evans told the newspaper. “It’s the largest number of club members ever.”

“You’re in the club to escape from everything else and Jane was there to help you enjoy your day,” added member Brian Catrick. “Jane was entertaining people every day more than ever.”

Reports said Sealer was survived by his wife and two children.

The golf course is located near Kennesaw State University, where officials alerted students and faculty after learning of Saturday’s shooting, the Journal Constitution reported. Celer routinely helps players on the Kennesaw State University men’s golf team get an internship on the course, coach Bryant Odom noted.

The Sealer family has asked “everyone to respect their privacy and allow them to grieve at this time,” Lou Botino, Chairman of the Board of Pinetree, said Monday.

On Sunday, US PGA President Jim Richerson posted a condolence statement on Twitter.

“Our hearts are truly saddened to hear of the senseless murder that took place yesterday at Pine Tree Country Club in Georgia that claimed the life of PGA member Gene Siler,” Richerson wrote.
