I think you should leave with Tim Robinson giving us plenty of inevitable memes on Twitter long after the first season premiere. But the most famous came from the sketch “Brooks Brothers”, where Tim Robinson wears a hot dog suit. A mob tries to find out who wrecked the Weiner Hut at the store, and Robinson’s character tries to blend in with them, saying, “We’re all trying to find the guy who did it.” The screencap became a favorite among Twitter users at the end of the Trump administration, with many responding to his factually incorrect tweets with the meme, and it garnered plenty of miles when Donald Trump denied wrongdoing while fomenting the rebellion in January. It’s possible that even your parents, who have no clue about Robinson, could recognize the screenshot due to its frequent use as a political response.
The new season of “I Think You Should Leave” doesn’t have a sketch that could be the next hot guy meme that could easily turn into the Resistance Twitter. However, it does contain “Dan Flashes,” which inadvertently became a top contender in the meme world before anyone knew the scheme was coming. On June 14, a press photo of the current Beach Boys lineup, wearing exotic-patterned T-shirts, went viral on Twitter. It was the perfect fodder for jokes, and I think you should let fans not expect that there’s a whole sketch waiting for them in the new season about the kind of bold plaid shirts they really couldn’t stop talking about.
In Dan Flashes, a man named Mike (Robinson) lies on a sofa during a meeting. He was called by a co-worker to use his lunch paycheck during this business trip to buy plaid shirts. Mike doesn’t deny it, but who needs food when you can get a new Dan Flashes shirt? Happened to have a new one in stock that day for $450! So, no, he’s not going to eat lunch, fuck you a lot, Doug. And if you think $450 is a lot, there’s also a $1,000 “too bad” shirt he wants “because the style is so brutal” — or, depending on who’s talking, $2,000. Don’t you know that these prices are reasonable because the more intricate the pattern, the more expensive the shirt?
“Dan Flashes” shares the essence of Season 1’s “Focus Group”, also known as “The Old Man Defending a Good Steering Wheel That Doesn’t Fly While Driving.” It’s not necessarily the funniest of season two (that honor will likely go to “Spectrum” or “Prank Show”). But it stands out in its absurdity and idiosyncrasy. Netflix couldn’t have known that the Mimi Beach Boys would make this cartoon more funny, as Mike tells co-worker Susan, “The guys Dan Flashes used to advertise for them look a lot like me.” You can already picture everyone on Twitter doing the same joke, pairing screenshots with the press photo of the band, the older and younger members, and the new members being barely recognizable as the white men all wearing flashy styles.
In case you need help visualizing clients who look a lot like Robinson, the show goes a step further. In the accompanying graphic, we see a herd of the shiniest, rudest men you can imagine loose on shirts, ready (literally) to kill for a chance to stand out by bombarding bold fabrics. The upmarket fight club is found in The Shops At The Creek, along with a café called Yellow Smokes and Mario Cantozi’s award-winning bakery; These store names seem so special to a world I think you should leave, as if they were made by artificial intelligence to be nondescript and funny at the same time.
“Dan Flashes” may be the meme’s strongest competitor, but that doesn’t mean it’s the only memorable graphic. There’s Santa Claus who says he’s “saw every dick on the planet” in “Detective Crushmore Junkt,” the guy who has an enemy named Jimmy Taco in “Wife Joke,” and the guy who bothers his co-worker to donate to a fake pants site called Calico Cut Pants (“You’ll That give!”) in “Calico-Cut Trousers.” But fans probably won’t stop thinking about “Dan Flashes” for months to come — and they’ll never look at a plaid shirt the same way again.
