Nintendo’s new Switch model has most of the improvements, like a bigger and better screen, on the console itself. But its dock has also been upgraded with a new look and more features, and Nintendo says that if you just want that, not a whole new system, you can buy it separately.

A Nintendo spokesperson told Digital Trends that both the dock color, white and black, will be available for purchase on their own. It won’t include any cables (current standalone docking purchases don’t either), and while no price or release date has been announced, expect to take the dock’s current $60 price and pay it a little higher to account for the added features.

These features include… well, just one main thing, which is the addition of a LAN port, which would be great news for anyone who has to rely on a slow and/or patchy wi-fi connection. It also has rounded corners, which looks a bit nicer, and may also contribute to reducing the number of scratched screens if you have this particular problem.

The docks will only be available directly from Nintendo, which means you won’t be able to get one from GameStop or Amazon or whatever. They will also be interchangeable, meaning you can use an old dock on a new Switch, and vice versa.

If you’re just joining us, the new switch – officially called the Nintendo Switch (OLED model) – is pretty much unchanged internally, apart from doubling the internal storage from 32GB to 64GB, and it will display in and out of TVs. In the same decisions. Most of the improvements come on the outside, with a newer, larger 7-inch screen, up from the original Switch’s 6.2 inches.

G/O Media may get commission

There’s also, perhaps most exciting of all from a purely practical point of view, a greatly improved kickstand, which now extends across the back of the console rather than appearing like a wobbling, unstable little fin.

It will be $350, and it will be released on October 8.
