MANILA, Philippines – A “short-lived” volcanic eruption occurred in the main crater of Taal Volcano Wednesday morning, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).
“At 5:18 a.m. today, a short-lived volcanic eruption occurred in the main crater and produced a gray plume that rose 300 meters before drifting to the southeast,” Phivolcs said in his post.
Phivolcs director Renato Solidum told INQUIRER.net in a text message that recent volcanic activity “does not have a significant impact on communities far from the volcano island because the ash is mainly confined to the main crater and the island with the height of the eruption plume. The 5:18 am was 300 metres.”
Solidum told a separate interview with ABS-CBN’s Teleradyo that the eruption only lasted until 5:19 a.m.
In its post, Phivolcs said that in the past 24 hours, the Taal Volcano Network has recorded 55 volcanic earthquakes, including one “blast” type earthquake, 44 low-frequency volcanic earthquakes, and five volcanic earthquakes at intervals of two to five minutes. , five hybrid earthquakes and low-level earthquakes have persisted since April.
Meanwhile, high levels of volcanic sulfur dioxide or SO2 emissions generated steam-rich plumes that rose 1,500 meters before drifting to the southwest of the main crater. Phivolcs said sulfur dioxide emissions averaged 7,560 tons on Tuesday.
“It’s high (sulfur dioxide emissions) and that’s what we’re saying there is a possibility of Taal volcano eruptions because the sulfur dioxide emission is high,” Solidum told Teleradyo, adding that eruptions larger than those recorded this morning may still occur at the volcano.
(This is high and that is why we say eruptions may occur at Taal volcano due to the high level of sulfur dioxide emission.)
Alert Level 3 was raised over the volcano after it released a 1 km ‘dark phromegmatic plume’ last Thursday.
On alert level 3, magma erupting from the volcano’s main crater could lead to an “explosive eruption,” according to Phivolcs.
