Eric Adams wins the Democratic primary for mayor of New York City

Eric Adam secured his place as the Democratic candidate in the race for mayor of New York City Tuesday, winning the Democratic primary.

Adams — who if elected to be Black’s second mayor in the Big Apple — beat presidential candidate-turned-mayor Andrew Yang, Maya Wiley, who was endorsed by New York Democratic Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the top contender. Catherine Garcia.

The Associated Press announced Adams as the winner early Tuesday night based on the latest tables, which included the most absentee votes.

The former police captain ran a different race than his fellow Democratic candidates as a moderate and campaigned against the Stop Police Funding movement.

“We will not recover as a city if we go back in time and see an increase in violence, especially gun violence,” Adams said after the May shooting of three people, including a 4-year-old girl, in Times Square. .

Adams often referred to his dual identity and how his platform shaped the police in the United States during his time on the campaign trail.

The 22-year-old veteran reportedly had his share of police brutality as a black teen when he was beaten at the age of 15.

Adams then became a police officer in 1984 and rose to captain before leaving the force to run for the state Senate in 2006.

But while in the police force, he helped launch a group that lobbied for criminal justice reform and countered racial profiling, known as “100 Black Law Enforcement Careers.”

“If black lives really matter, it can’t just be against police abuse,” Adams told his supporters on the night of the first race. “It must be against the violence that is tearing our societies apart.”

Adams will face Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa in the final race for the New York City mayoral seat.

But given New York City’s Democratic voter base – where the Democrats outperformed the Republicans by seven to one – Adams seems likely to win.

Current New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio is unable to seek a third term in accordance with the city’s charter.
