An Iowa man was ordered to have a $10,000 bond on Tuesday after he allegedly carried a rifle with a laser sight in a Chicago hotel room overlooking the shore of Lake Michigan over the Fourth of July weekend, according to authorities.
A housekeeping employee at the W Hotel was reported to have told police around 6:45 p.m. Sunday that they saw the rifle, a handgun, and five rifle lockers in a room kept by the suspect, Keegan Castiel, 32. The room on the 12th floor overlooks the Ohio Street beach and Navy Pier, a tourist attraction in the city.
Chicago Police Chief David Brown said during a news conference on Tuesday that the firearms on the window sill were in a “very suspicious situation.”

“This employee saw something by entering a room to clean it, which likely prevented tragedy from occurring,” Brown said. “So it is very important and valuable and we must … (to) commend this employee for being knowledgeable and letting us know so that we can respond quickly and possibly avoid tragedy.”
Chicago-based FOX 32 reported that Castiel of Ankeny, Iowa, was arrested at the hotel Sunday in possession of a rifle and pistol. He is facing two criminal charges related to the illegal aggravated use of a loaded weapon without a FOID tag.
“The state describes you’re in a hotel room for a laser-range rifle.. overlooking the Ohio Street beach,” Cook County judge David Navarro said. “I understand from the state’s presentation and your attorney that you have permission to own firearms in Iowa. However, we are clearly not in Iowa.”
Police said they found a semi-automatic rifle with a shotgun in the room — along with magazines and a 0.45-caliber pistol.

Castiel has a permit to possess firearms in Iowa, and prosecutors have required him to surrender all licenses to carry a gun, according to the Chicago Tribune.
“There is no prior criminal history for this individual nor any other cases in our federal databases, but it is clearly very concerning given the location of the W Hotel in the Navy Pier,” Brown said. “The Joint Terrorism Task Force officers questioned the information, interviewed this individual with a companion, and we are continuing this investigation.”
The judge set his bond at $10,000 on the condition that he turn over all of his weapons and FOID cards. FOX 32 reported that Castel could live in Iowa as he awaits trial, but must appear at all of his trial dates.
Castiel has two previous DUI convictions in the state, according to the station. Brown did not say whether investigators had determined why Castiel had guns in the hotel room.
