Philadelphia – A massive construction maneuver toppled and crushed a man to death Tuesday night in Philadelphia, police said.
Just after 9:10 p.m., police said, firefighters and police responded to the 3100 block of Convention Street near Franklin Field and the Penn Museum in University City and found the man trapped under the drilling rig. It is not known how long the 55-year-old has been there.
According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, he was still breathing but was unconscious and bleeding heavily when he was rescued. Chief Inspector Scott Small said paramedics took him to Ben Presbyterian Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 9:45 p.m.
Small said one of the drilling workers was not seriously injured, but may have been taken to hospital for examination.
The rig has been flagged as belonging to the Cook Drilling Corp of Trevose. The company’s website shows a device that looks similar and says it weighs 75 tons.
A company representative could not be reached for comment.
Small said police are investigating the incident and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration is expected to investigate the incident.
