9 missing in waters south of Key West, Coast Guard says

Officials said nine people were missing in the waters off Key West as Tropical Storm Elsa headed toward Florida.

The US Coast Guard said in a tweet that at least 15 people were rescued on Tuesday.

A Navy ship initially pulled two people out of waters about 23 miles southeast of Key West around 4 p.m. and notified the Coast Guard, according to officials. The crews responded, rescuing 10 more people and deploying helicopters, planes and ships to find the missing. The last 15 were found during that search.

Pictures showed some of them clinging to orange-colored floating devices as heavy rain fell on the water.

In another tweet, the Coast Guard said: “The search for more survivors continues while we assess the health condition and provide medical care to those rescued.”
