PHOENIX – After the first practice this week with a slew of 2021 NBA Finals logos and posters draped throughout the arena, instead of the usual routine of getting treated and going home, nearly the entire Phoenix Suns team was hung in the locker room for a few hours charging and enjoying by the moment.
“Nobody wants to leave,” a team official told Yahoo Sports.
It was an impromptu meeting where the players tackled the approach needed for Game 1, what to expect if Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmou were to go and what it took to get to that point. They also discussed life in general.
They culminate in time on the court, but it is their harmony off the field and their true love for each other that enable them to play with less ego resolve and emotion.
It’s a key element that explains why the Suns, with little or no post-season experience prior to this season, have brought down veteran teams with a proven post-season track record and Tuesday’s first game of the Finals was no different.

Chris Paul took early control of the Finals MVP (he’s a BetMGM favorite at -145) by scoring a high 32 points and distributing nine assists to accompany the Suns to a 118-105 win, taking three wins away from the franchise. First NBA Championship.
“I’m just closed to the game and don’t pay much attention [to the environment]Paul said. “Just trying to stay in the moment…but it’s exciting. That’s one win, and I think I’m just focused on the task at hand.”
Devin Booker scored 27 points and six assists.
“You want to win every game, especially the first game. It gives you a level of confidence,” Suns coach Monty Williams said. “Our starts over the course of the qualifiers, when we start well, tend to build confidence for our team.”
Chris Middleton led the offensive offensive for the Bucks, scoring 29 points, pulling seven boards and draining five times.
The story continues
Antetokounmpo is back in the lineup after missing the last two games with a very stretched left knee. He contributed 20 points and had 17 rebounds, but it was noticeable that he still preferred his knee at times and that his condition wasn’t there yet.
“When [injury] Happened, I thought I’d be out for a year,” Antetokounmpo said. “I’m just glad I’m back after two games.”
Chris Paul, Dender Eaton exchange symbolizes team chemistry
To show the closeness to this Suns team, this lighthearted exchange between Paul and Deandre Ayton is highlighted at the end of the game.
Seconds after a 1-0 lead, Paul and Eaton struggled for the defensive rebound. Traditionally, keepers backed off from the seniors, but Paul grabbed what would have been the 20th iTunes board and would have given him his first game after 20-20 (he finished the match with 22 points).
When the last bell sounded, Paul playfully turned to the technical staff and then to Booker to call attention to how Eaton was trying to confiscate his fourth bounce.
“I got the book [Chris]. Ayton said. “I was just happy with the performance of all of us, to be honest.”
While Ayton was on the podium, Paul was sitting in the back of the media room listening to his teammate.
“Just seeing him speak, just seeing the maturity in him not just as a basketball player but as a person,” Paul said of Ayton. “Not everyone gets a chance to get to know him off the field, but he has a big heart. One of the best players I’ve ever met. So the success and recognition he’s getting now is well deserved, and I couldn’t be happier for someone else on our team.”
Booker agreed.
“We have been on [Ayton’s] The donkey,” he said. “That’s why Chris can say that’s what he’s most proud of, and I feel the same way because you sometimes walk around the field, Chris will talk to him and I’ll wait there. Are you done, Chris? Well, let me go and tell him something. So we are all in his ear. We are all on it. For him to keep all this information and perform at the level he was doing, it’s hard to put it into words because we were tough on him. He has gone through the stages of his NBA career, but since these playoffs began, I’ve seen his maturity and growth grow to “another level, and he keeps improving.”
How Dollars Should Adapt to NBA Finals 2
Jrue Holiday struggled on his debut in the Finals, taking 4 of 14 off the field for 10 points. But he scored nine assists for the team and got seven rebounds.
The Suns targeted Bobby Portes in the second half to get the pick to make him alternate defense of Paul. Paul is one of the greatest table-setters of all time, but he celebrates Portis.
“Chris Paul, it was a bucket, man,” Booker said. “…He’s the greatest captain to ever play this game. But he’s been a bucket for too long. And the six years I’ve been playing against him, or five years playing against him, you understand. There’s no exploratory report saying Chris Paul can’t get a bucket “.
Game two will be Thursday in Phoenix. If the Bucks wish to leave Arizona with a split, they know they’ll have to do a better job defending Paul.
“It’s hard to guard a pick-and-roll,” Bucks coach Mike Budenholzer said. “I think we have to keep getting better. We have to keep watching the movie and see how we can take some of the rhythm off, or put it in place. [Paul’s] Not getting into places easily. This will be a huge part of the quest between Game 1 and Match 2..”
