NASA’s Mars helicopter has just had its most terrifying flight yet

On Monday, NASA said the 4-pound helicopter took off on its ninth and final flight through the Martian sky over “unfriendly terrain.” While the two previous Ingenuity flights have kept the helicopter at bay with NASA’s Perseverance Mars rover, this latest flight has taken the helicopter over terrain too difficult for Percy to traverse.

“Perseverance is currently on the eastern edge of a scientifically interesting area called ‘Séítah’, which has sandy ripples that can be very challenging terrain for wheeled vehicles like the rover,” an engineer, in a blog post released prior to the perilous Ingenuity voyage.

Images taken by Ingenuity during the voyage can provide geologists with insight into how undulating features form.

The creativity flew for just over 2.5 minutes at a segment of about 16 feet (5 meters) per second, according to a NASA tweet. The helicopter covered a total area of ​​2,051 feet, or 625 metres, breaking a slew of records in the process.

NASA said Ingenuity’s Flight 9 has also expanded the limits of the helicopter’s navigation system, which is designed to operate on a flatter surface. Creativity takes pictures of the surface of Mars, then a computer algorithm studies those images and helps the helicopter make split-second decisions about where to land safely. But the algorithm is designed to make these decisions on the assumption that the Earth will be flat.

NASA says there was a possibility that the “high cliffs and ripples” at Sittah may have confused the Ingenuity sensors. To explain this, the helicopter slowed down over the most complex terrain. Fortunately for the helicopter, the plan worked, and the flight seemed to go off without a hitch.

Creativity soared into the sky first in a short 30-second jump on April 19. From there, the helicopter experienced some hiccups.

A software glitch delayed the fourth Ingenuity flight at the end of April, but helicopter engineers identified and fixed it immediately. And just last month, during its sixth flight, a computer glitch caused the helicopter to tilt back and forth mid-flight, NASA said. Fortunately, the team quickly identified and resolved the problem. Since then, sailing has been smooth.
