3:25pm PDT – Stephen tells us, “Losing my parents before I got out was always my worst nightmare. It just happened now. I’m afraid my parents won’t live to see me as a free man. Today I lost the person I wanted to take care of and give a better life when I’m free I cannot describe in words the pain of losing my mother.”
Stephen Avery – the man at the center of Netflix’s “Making a Murderer” – deals with another personal blow… the death of his mother.
Dolores Avery died Thursday morning, according to Avery’s attorney, Kathleen Zellner. Zellner included a message for Avery fans, saying, “He needs your support now more than ever.” It also listed his mailing address at Waubun Correctional Institution in Wisconsin.
Earl, Stephen’s brother, tells us that Dolores was in hospice care for 3 weeks before her death… She eventually went out of dementia. He said the last time I spoke to Stephen was probably 8 or 9 months ago.
Dolores, who had always maintained that her son was innocent, died just a day before Stephen’s 59th birthday.
Stephen and his nephew, Brendon Dacey, were convicted of killing photographer Theresa Halbach in 2005 after police said her remains were found in a burning pit on the Avery family’s property. Stephen was sentenced to life in prison without parole in 2007.
Zellner took over Stephen’s case in 2016, arguing that his rights had been violated and that investigators had collected evidence beyond a search warrant. Recently, she stated that she has more witnesses who should secure a new trial for Avery.
Zellner asked the Court of Appeals to suspend Avery’s latest appeal and send his case to the Circuit Court to hear the testimony of new witnesses.
Dolores was 83 years old.
