Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo was the most dominant force on the field in Game 2 of the NBA Finals, but Devin Booker and the Phoenix Suns broke the MVP twice in the series.
Booker and Chris Paul had an answer for each inning of the Bucks, scoring 31 and 23 points, respectively, in a 118-108 win that propelled The Suns to two winners from their first tournament, as the series passed to Milwaukee.
Match 3 is scheduled for Sunday at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.
Antetokounmpo scored a game-high 42 points on a 15-22 shot (11-18 FT) and added 12 rebounds. Bucks stars Chris Middleton and Puppy Holidays got together to shoot 12 to 37 from the field (32%).
Meanwhile, Phoenix made 20 out of 40 3-point attempts. Six different suns were made several times, led by Booker Seven. Michael Bridges added 27 points. DeAndre Ayton (10 points, 11 rebounds) and Jae Crowder (11 points, 10 rebounds) scored triple-doubles, as Phoenix’s starting lineup proved too deep.
Holiday summoned his much-needed aggression at the start, attacking the basket and agreeing to Paul as a defensive assignment. The Bucks outperformed Phoenix 20-0 in the paint in the first quarter. Milwaukee made no mistakes and only one spin in the opening frame. Basketball was the Bucks at its best. However, the Suns only trailed 29-26, as five of them combined to make eight three-pointers in the first 12 minutes.
They added three more in the second quarter of 30 points which turned the tide. Seven Suns scored in the clip, and Mikal Bridges led them with 13 points per half, and they were leading 56-45. The Bucks fired 36% of the first-half entry.
Antetokounmpo dominated third, scoring 20 of his team’s 33 points—the most in a single quarter in his playoff career—and assisted with another six, but Milwaukee gained little ground. Phoenix-hot Phoenix had a combined 22-point Poker and Paul in the frame in a 9-for-14 shot (4-for-5 from a 3-point distance).
Thanks to Antetokounmpo’s strength, the Bucks cut the difference to five with 8:45 left in the match, but fired awkwardly on a blocked shot, went out for 58 seconds, and the Suns pushed their lead to 10. Booker VII 3. The Lil Pointer gave Phoenix a 103-90 lead in the middle Fourth quarter.
The story continues
Antetokounmpo, Middleton and Holiday made one final push, as a 7-0 response put the Bucks back on their property. Milwaukee Reserve Pat Connaughton got a clean look on a three-pointer that would have made it 103-100 in the five minutes remaining. Instead, his step smashed back.
Two offensive runs on Phoenix’s next possession eventually hit the ball into the steady hand of Paul, who drilled 3-pointers to make it nine points. The Bucks have not climbed again in eight years.
