EU regulator finds link between heart inflammation and COVID mRNA vaccines

(Reuters) – Europe’s drug regulator has found a possible link between rare heart inflammation and the COVID-19 vaccines from Pfizer and Modern, and advised people with a history of rare blood disorders to avoid getting the coronavirus vaccine.

Heart disease, myocarditis and pericarditis should be listed as potential side effects of the two mRNA vaccines, the European Medicines Agency (EMA) Safety Committee said Friday.

Such cases primarily occurred within 14 days of vaccination, more often after the second dose and in younger adult men, according to the EMA. This is in line with findings US health officials found last month.

The EMA also recommended that people with a history of capillary leak syndrome (CLS) not be vaccinated with the J&J vaccine. The watchdog in June requested that CLS be added as a side effect of AstraZeneca’s shot.

AstraZeneca and J&J vaccines use different versions of the cold virus to provide instructions for making coronavirus proteins to produce an immune response.
