A fan managed to steal a high-risk club from Rory McIlroy’s briefcase at the 2021 Scottish Open and managed to get some practice done on Friday before being escorted by security.

The astonishing moment on the tenth jersey at Renaissance Club in Scotland was captured on video as the unidentified man first grabs his hood and then returns to the bag for a club while McIlroy, the boxer Harry Diamond and his co-playing partner John Ram look puzzled:

“It is now in the hands of Police Scotland,” a spokesperson for the European Tour told ESPN.

McIlroy and Company were preparing to start their tour in 10th place when the accident occurred.

The four-time main champ said after the tour that he was “surprised” about the incident but credited security, saying the situation was “handled efficiently,” according to Martin Dempster of The Scotsman.

An eyewitness told Dempster: “When someone told him he couldn’t do it, he replied, ‘Why not? “At that point, the security men assigned to pursue the group moved in and took him away.”

Ram added that the whole ordeal was “very funny”.

“Security was good, but these things can happen,” Ram told reporters. “He had good timing. He walked in with so much confidence. We were all thinking, ‘Maybe he’s supposed to be here.’ We didn’t know. Rory and I thought it was a joke or someone was supposed to be there.”

McIlroy completed his second round with no further issue, shooting a par 71 to stay one under the general, leaving the Northern Irish one shot below the expected cut-off line as play continues into the second round at North Berwick.

Ram is the championship leader at the age of 11 under.
