Samsung Galaxy S22 can do everything to cool the steam room

The Samsung Galaxy S22 range can use steam rooms to cool off the insides of phones, using technology often found in high-end gaming phones.

It’s not that Samsung is alien to using steam rooms in its driving, but it’s been done haphazardly, being put into the Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus but not its cheaper siblings (they’ve got an “advanced heat pipe” system) as well as in some (but not all) phones Samsung Galaxy Note 20 and Note 20 Ultra.

A new DigiTimes report now indicates that Samsung is considering returning steam rooms to its 2022 flagships, and while that remains unconfirmed, it’s clearly promising enough for Taiwanese suppliers to prepare should the phone maker order them en masse.

That should mean the Samsung Galaxy S22’s flagship range, but it could also include other top-tier phones – like if there’s a Samsung Galaxy Note 22 or a Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4, for example.

Do phones really need a steam room?

Steam rooms sure look like the best mobile cooling cases, especially since they’ve featured in the best gaming phones – well, the Asus ROG 3 has a clear plastic section on its back cover to show off its steam room.

And while steam rooms cool phones, it’s not clear if they’re the only solution for top-tier flagships. In fact, the Note 20 and Note 20 Ultra phones have multiple cooling systems that have been implemented quietly – seemingly at random – across both models. Some will have copper steam chambers, while others will have graphite thermal pads that pull the heat away.

In an investigative shredding report, iFixit found that systems appear to be split between phone models seemingly without rhyme or reason. While flaunting the steam rooms appears to have been a marketing boon that sold more units in previous S series flagship phones, they are likely to fail when damaged, an expert told the site. While graphite pads have been said to feature in the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip, perhaps bringing steam chambers into its 2022 smartphones meant the sound maker wasn’t settled on one cooling technology over the other.
