A 27-year-old man has been arrested in Japan after he was caught trying to sell the modified Zelda: Breath of The Wild files.

As reported by Niigata’s streaming system (and monitored by Dextro), Ichimin Sho was arrested on July 8 after he posted edited save files for the Nintendo Switch version of Breath of The Wild. He posted his services on an unspecified auction site, calling it “the most powerful software.” It will provide modified save files that will give the player improved abilities in the game and also the hard-to-obtain items have been provided as requested by the customer. On his original listing, he reportedly charged 3,500 yen (about $31) from people for his service.

Niigata Prefectural Police spotted the list and arrested Shu on July 8 for possible violation of the Anti-Unfair Competition Act. After his arrest, the man admitted that he had sold modified software and software before, and told the police that he had sold about 10 million yen (about 90,000 US dollars) in the past year and a half.

While this may sound wild, getting you caught selling saved files, it’s not a new situation in Japan. Police in Japan previously arrested people for modifying video game software that violated Japan’s Anti-Unfair Competition Act. This same law was also used by Nintendo to sue the go-kart company in 2017. In 2015, another man was arrested in Japan after selling cheats on the popular online shooting game Alliance of Valiant Arms.

G/O Media may get commission

In a comment provided to BSN, Okazawa Deputy Director of the Cybercrime Countermeasures Division of the Niigata Prefectural Police asked people not to create, sell, or purchase modified data or storage software.

This all seems extreme to me. I think the police in Japan (and around the world for that matter) should be more focused on the most serious and important crimes. But I think a dude selling some old Switch saves is also important… for someone.
