Understanding the Yankees’ disappointing MLB draft history

[ad_1]

The Yankees will pick 20th place on Sunday in the first round of the MLB Draft. This equates to their fifth highest pick in the past 28 drafts.

At the time, their initial pick was never above 16, reflecting their winning records of over a quarter-century and signing free agents that resulted in the picks being forfeited as compensation. They were first selected at number 30 or later eight times in that period – and on three occasions, 51 or later.

So, although the Yankees found very little production (even average production), and much less influence, in the draft there are mitigating factors, nothing is more relevant than where they scored. Keep in mind that the draft includes mainly local players — not international amateurs from the Dominican Republic, Venezuela, and Asian countries, for example, who fill about 25 percent of the rosters. Players such as Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Fernando Tates Jr. and Shohei Ohtani were not recruited.

Also, with the increasing popularity of other sports, sports talent was drained from the draft. So not regularly making it to the top five or 10 picks, where the skill of making the difference remains, complicates the crafting process.

By the end of the July 4th weekend, there were 955 players drafted into the majors this year. Of those, 173 — or 18.1 percent — were selected before the Yankees were first picked.

As of Wednesday, no organization had drafted more position players who were in the top 50 in combined substitution wins from 2019-21 than the four-star. But three of them – Carlos Correa, Alex Bergman and George Springer – were all drafted before the Yankees’ pick (Ramon Laureano, captured in the 16th round was fourth).

Having a left-handed hitter like Michael Conforto in the Mets, Brandon Nemo and Dom Smith would benefit the Yankees. But they ranked tenth, eleventh and thirteenth overall.

Perhaps most famously, the Angels used the compensation pick they had when Yankees signed Mark Teixeira as free agent to take Mike Trout 25 overall (choice one after they had already taken over Randall Grechuk). I think the stories told by the Yankees about their appreciation of chain trout far above most industries and making it second on their board of directors after Stephen Strasbourg. Instead, they didn’t choose until the 29th and took Slade Heathcote.

Trout was among 44 of the 65 whose formulations were announced last weekend. The Yankees picked two – Aaron Judge and Mark Melancon. But of 42 others, a third (14) was drafted before the Yankees’ turn came.

“American baseball is good, but the impact on those is good,” said Damon Oppenheimer, who has managed the Yankees drafts as a scouting manager since 2005. [later first-round] scanty areas. It’s really slim. Team makers are the best picks, the 20-50 pick, and this is a completely different kind of trigger and cap. It’s all different. It’s not the same opportunity to get high-impact people.”

In an effort to compensate, the Yankees often bet on great talent that slipped for a variety of reasons. Heathcote fell into this category as the athletic swing quarterback. So did Andrew Brackman, a 6-foot-10 bi-athlete (basketball) in North Carolina who placed 30th for the Yankees in 2007. So did Gerrit Cole, whose Yankees finished 28th in 2008 Despite his fervent insistence that he was going to UCSD (which he did).

But what did the Yankees miss? I don’t think it’s fair, for example, to ask: Why didn’t the Yankees take JD Martinez instead of Heathcote? Martinez was taken in the 20th round in 2009 by the Astros – meaning even Houston ignored him for 19 rounds. It’s fair to consider whoever was picked within 10 picks after the first selections for the Yankees as the general group of who would have been picked instead. There was often one or two better options, but there was also a lack of greatness in general and many who did not advance in the majors.

So just a snapshot from, say, 2010-17 – the drafts that fill most current rosters: In 2010, when the Yankees took Cito Culver 32nd, five of the next 10 never made the majors and the best in that range was Noah Syndergaard. In 2011, the Yankees captured No. 51 Dante Bechet Jr. Blake Snell went alongside Rays. But he was actually seventh Tampa Bay out of 10 first-round picks, five of which didn’t make it to the majors, and the best after Snell was Mickey Mahtock.

In 2012, with pick number 30, the Yankees tried again with high-ceilinged high school pitcher Ty Hensley—who didn’t make any of the majors like Bichette and Culver—and the next 10 picks included Jose Berrios, Mitch Hanegger and Joey Gallo. In 2013, the Yankees had 26, 32, and 33 picks. Two—Eric Jagello and Ian Clarkin—never played in the major tournaments, but the Yankees had the best selection in that area at Judge. In 2014, the Yankees’ number one pick wasn’t even Jacob Lindgren at 55, and Alex Verdugo was in the next 10.

In 2015, the Yankees placed 16th for James Caprillian. He helped them get to Sonny Gray, who is finally in good health this year and doing well. Walker Buehler was the only quality player for the next ten years.

In 2016, the Yankees picked Blake Rutherford’s 16th. He has yet to play in the major tournaments, but he was the key piece in assisting Todd Frazier, Tommy Kanley and David Robertson of the White Sox. Kanley and Robertson were originally Yankees picks. Robertson was part of Oppenheimer’s best draft, in 2006, when the Yankees also relegated with Ian Kennedy, Juba Chamberlain, Dylan Bettance and Melancon.

But it was also 2016 when Yankees’ West Coast Dodgers’ Doppelganger had a great draft, taking Gavin Lux and hunting Will Smith after Yankees picked Rutherford. So in successive years, the Yankees could have had Buehler and Lux or Smith instead of Kaprielian and Rutherford, highlighting why the Dodgers are rising while the Yankees are reeling.

In 2017, the Yanks acquired Clarke Schmidt first. Currently the best out of the next 10 is David Peterson by the Mets.

Where did the Yankees perform well? Presence. Annually they have among the most recruited players in the majors. They had 38 last year – only the Cardinals (43), Royals (43) and Astros (39) had more. They are tied for second place in 2019 with 42 and 2018 with 45. But what’s generally lacking is the high-end distinction.

Not that American baseball is infallible, but it does give a picture at the moment. And the Yankees haven’t had a pitcher in the top 30 before the season since Chamberlain finished third in 2008, and no center player since 2002, when Drew Henson was ninth and Nick Johnson thirteenth.

The Yankees have had only 13 players inducted into the top positions this year: Judge, Jake Cave, Dustin Fowler, Ben Gamel, Brett Gardner, Chris Gittens, Kyle Higashioka, Mark Payton, Rob Refsnyder, Austin Romine, Nick Solak, Tyler Wade and Mason Williams. Judge, Gardner Johnson and Austin Jackson were by far the best Yankees center drafting players of the century. You could say the Yankees have used a general amateur philosophy of finding central players internationally, such as Robinson Kano and Gary Sanchez, and crafting their bowlers. But they didn’t quite excel at starting to promote either.

Some of this can be explained by the lack of high selections. The Yankees’ development program is also underrated in the sport. However, it’s not as if players like Cave, Gamel or Solak are leaving the Yankees’ education and excel elsewhere.

Also, it’s hard to craft well. There is a perception, for example, that rays and athletics are formed by draft. But they’re more experienced at finding underappreciated talent in the trades — Tampa Bay had the fewest players drafted into the majors last year, when it won the AL. Few organizations are particularly good at consistently finding talent in the draft. Cardinals are brought out for doing so.

Americans are not the best, they are not the worst. But while they try to maintain excellence, they need more of their draft, no matter how late their choice is.
