MIAMI – Atlanta Braves star Ronald Acuña Jr was taken off the field in tears on Saturday after injuring his leg while chasing a volleyball in Miami.
Acuña landed awkwardly on his right leg after jumping on the caution track in the right field to try to catch the car from Jazz Chisholm Jr. In the fifth half. He hit the pitch wall and collapsed onto the warning track, instantly grabbing toward his right knee as Chisholm ran out of Homer into the park.
Acuña tried to get out but was back on the ground in a shallow right field. A coach nursed him while retrieving a wagon, and anxious colleagues quietly gathered around him.
Tears welled up in Akuna’s eyes as he waited. When the carriage slammed into the nearby warning lane, he had to be helped and put no weight on his right leg.
No other details were immediately available about the extent of the injury.
Acuña was scheduled to start on the field for the NL All-Star team on Tuesday, his third appearance. The 23-year-old hit .283 with 24 home runs and 52 RBI for the three-time defending NL East champion, who started the day second behind the New York Mets.
