Surfside, FL – The answers to why the Champlain Towers South have fallen will likely not come for at least several months.
However, crucial clues to what happened could be just a few meters away.
To find out what happened, the structural engineer assigned to look into the collapse examined the sister building, the North Champlain Towers, which is still standing.
That person is engineering expert Allyn Kilsheimer, who works in the City of Surfside.
His team takes core samples of concrete and uses ground-penetrating radar to help investigate why the South Tower fell.
“We’re looking for a trigger in the south tower,” Kilsheimer said. “The building has been there for 40 years.”
So far, Kilsheimer hasn’t found anything to worry about about the North Tower, which some residents have voluntarily vacated.
“The northern building is similar but not the same as the southern building,” he said.
He will compare the data he collects there with what he finds in the debris pile at the South Tower site to help make a final decision.

“The North Building is a makeshift science lab for us,” Kilsheimer said. “Everything we’ve done so far has been a positive result.”
Kilsheimer said he doesn’t have any theories yet but is working on some potential causes of the crash.
“It may not be one cause, but rather several triggers,” he said. “There is no way of knowing at this point.”
