The final scene of Black Widow plays after the end of the final credits, without the usual mid-credits sting. It is self-explanatory on the main points. Jelena (Florence Beau) visits Natasha’s grave, where she also encounters Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus), who is now also working with American agent John Walker. Then the evil agent gives her a new mission: to avenge Hook for his notable role in Natasha’s death. This should set up the Hawkeye series on Disney Plus, and lead to a confrontation with Hailee Steinfeld’s Kate Bishop. In an interview with Variety, star Florence Bow and director Kate Shortland discussed the fallout.

For Pugh, the immediate move to a new project was a surprise. “I never imagined it would go on so fast,” she says. But, she adds, it’s no surprise that she’ll remain in the dangerous life. “She’ll continue what she’s good at, and even though her sister isn’t there, she’s back at work… If you look at her uniform, and look at the way she dresses herself, that shows a thriving person.”

Originally, the scene could have been the MCU’s debut for Valentina, which probably left more casual fans scratching their heads. Instead, her first appearance came in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, allowing viewers at home to Google her name back. (Long story short: In the comics, she’s a sleepy agent inside SHIELD, a former Nick Fury, and once Madame Hydra.) Director Shortland revealed that Louis-Dreyfus didn’t need direction to play the enigmatic character. “I think I told her I really liked her,” she said. “I think sometimes I only asked for really small things between them. But she appeared as a fully formed genius. There was not much I could do but mess with her.”

She also revealed that the idea for Natasha’s final location came from Scarlett Johansson. “Scarlett talked to me about it: Her character hated public funerals,” Shortland said. “So the fact that she’s buried in a really special place, in sheds somewhere, felt pretty cool.”
