Trump in the January 6 uprising: ‘These were great people’

The remarks reflected recent efforts by Trump and his supporters to portray themselves as the parties affected by the January 6 riots, which left five dead and injured — and for a brief period, halted the wheel of democracy with President-elect Joe. Congress confirmed Biden’s victory over Trump in the Electoral College.

Trump’s reference to “great people” was similar to his comments after the bloody confrontation in Charlottesville. “You had some very bad people in that group. But you also had very good people on both sides,” he said in August 2017.

In his interview with Bartiromo, Trump said those who attended the January 6 events were lovers of people who wanted to save the nation.

“The crowd was unbelievable and I mentioned the word ‘love’, love is in the air, I’ve never seen anything like it,” he said of the gathering he organized on Ellipse.

“There was so much spirit, faith and love, there was such love in this gathering, you had over a million people,” he added, amplifying the size of his crowd.

After Trump’s speech, the Capitol was invaded by supporters of his quest to disrupt the Electoral College count. On their way, they clashed with police officers. According to the Ministry of Justice, approximately 140 police officers were assaulted. Hundreds of those who entered the Capitol are charged with various crimes, including more than 50 who are charged with using a deadly or dangerous weapon or causing serious bodily injury to an officer.

Both Trump and Bartiromo have expressed outrage over the fatal shooting of Ashley Babbitt inside the Capitol, repeatedly indicating a cover-up at work. Babbitt, an Air Force veteran, was fatally shot while trying to climb through a broken window during the mutiny.

“Who is the one who shot an innocent, wonderful, incredible, military woman, in the head?” Trump said. “There are no repercussions — if it was on the other side, it would be the biggest story in this country. Who shot Ashley Babbitt? People want to know and why.”

Bartiromo then referred to Babbitt as “a wonderful woman who was shot and killed on January 6th when she tried to climb out of a broken window”. Their remarks echoed those of some Trump supporters, including Representative Paul Gosar (R-Arizona), who claimed Babbitt had been “executed.”

Referring to his remarks to the public before storming the Capitol as “a very nice speech,” Trump also suggested that the blame for any violence that day could lie with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and other Democrats because they did not take the possibility of violence seriously.

“They are responsible,” he said.
