Super Mario 64 is a good game. But would you pay $1.5 million for a copy? Mostly not. But someone just did it.

Today, a high-quality, fully sealed copy of the Nintendo 64 Classic Super Mario 64 sold at auction for $1,560,000. This beats the previous record for a single video game auction, which was held by a very rare copy of The Legend Zelda and was set just a few days ago. This rare game sold for a staggering sale price of $870,000 on July 9th.

This copy of Super Mario 64 was auctioned off by Heritage Auctions, and it has a rating of 9.8 on the Wata scale. As a result of this high rating, Heritage Auctions says it is only one of fewer than five known sealed copies in such stunning condition. The auction started on July 9 and ended today, on July 11. Even before the auction started, this version of Mario 64 was making headlines with a starting price of $100,000.

After selling for $1.5 million today, this new record for a single video game auction beats the just-recorded record of $870,000. Prior to that, the record was kept by the NES version of Super Mario Bros which sold for $660,000 in April of this year. The new record of $1.5 million is more than double that of the old record set in April and nearly double the last record of $870,000.

G/O Media may get commission

All that money being spent on old video games is making me feel a little sick. I can only imagine what even a fraction of all this money could do to help so many people around the world. But people like to hide their assets and wealth in weird ways, I get. (I mean, I don’t understand. I’m not rich.)

It’s not just video games that fetch exorbitant prices in online auction houses. Pokémon cards are getting more and more expensive, with rare cards worth hundreds of thousands of dollars. Like rare video games, these prices are also rising month by month. At this rate, it is very likely that in the next few months I will write a blog about a video game or sell a Pokemon card for $5 million.

I have never regretted getting rid of all my old video games and more Pokemon cards.
