A 90-year-old Belgian woman died in March after contracting two strains of coronavirus at the same time. The woman, who had two species from the UK and South Africa, died five days after falling ill. The researchers say the case is the first of its kind, but they caution that there may be more. Something is loading.

A 90-year-old Belgian woman who died of COVID-19 in March was infected with a strain from the United Kingdom and South Africa simultaneously, researchers said at a press conference on Sunday.

Her case, discussed at the European Congress of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (ECCMID) as part of the Belgian research, is believed to be the first of its kind.

The woman, who was reportedly not vaccinated, fell ill in March and was treated at a hospital near Brussels, Belgian radio station RT said.

It is not clear how she became infected, but her doctors said she may have contracted the infection from two different people, Reuters reported.

While her oxygen levels were initially stable, her condition deteriorated very quickly, and she died five days later.

Molecular biologist Anne Vankerbergen said it is difficult to know if the co-infection played a role in the patient’s rapid deterioration.

“These two types were circulating in Belgium at the time, so it is possible that the woman had been infected with different viruses from two different people,” the Guardian said.

Vankeerberghen works at OLV Hospital in Belgium, which is leading the research. Their findings have not yet been submitted to a medical journal for publication.

Although there have been no other published cases of similar co-infection, the researchers believe the case shows that it is possible to catch two different types of COVID-19 simultaneously. “This phenomenon may have been underestimated,” Vankerbergen said, according to The Guardian.

There are four different types of coronavirus that experts around the world are concerned about.

The delta variant, which came from India and is more contagious than the original virus, is currently driving the most new infections in Europe and the United States.
