An unopened copy of Nintendo’s “Super Mario 64” sold at auction Sunday for $1.56 million, smashing the previous record amount paid for a single video game set just two days ago.

Heritage Auctions in Dallas, Texas noted that it was the first time a single video game had sold for more than $1 million.

Super Mario 64 was released in 1996 and quickly became a classic.

Heritage Auctions said in a statement that it was the first video game to feature the world-famous Mario character in 3D, and was the best-selling game on the Nintendo 64 platform.

Heritage Auctions said the game received the highest possible A++ score from video game rating company WataGames, meaning it has been kept in nearly impeccable condition.

Heritage did not immediately respond to The Post’s request for comment on who bought the game.

The record-breaking sale came just two days after a sealed copy of Nintendo’s The Legend of Zelda sold at auction on Friday for $870,000, setting a world record that did not last the weekend.

Valarie McLeckie, a video game specialist at Heritage, said in a statement that the auction house was shocked to see a game selling for more than $1 million shortly after auctioning a record-setting Zelda game.

The sale also underscores the degree to which the collectibles market has exploded during the pandemic.

Everything from sports cards and Pokemon cards to non-fungible tokens has skyrocketed over the past year with multi-million dollar auctions and companies gearing up to support the growing industry.
