Does the new angle show Conor McGregor’s threat to Dustin Poirier?

It usually doesn’t take long to change the news cycle in the world of MMA.

Soon after the latest thread on the water cooler, the next topic appears and before long, it’s all part white noise. But there could be a much longer shelf life for Dustin Poirier’s triple fallout against Conor McGregor.

Poirier (28-6 MMA, 20-5 UFC) defeated McGregor (22-6 MMA, 10-4 UFC) with a first-round TKO last Saturday at the UFC 264 main event at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. McGregor broke his left tibia and fibula in a shocking fashion late in the first round, stopping the doctor.

In preparing for the fight, MacGregor’s talk of litter escalated from his normal levels and included words about killing Poirier—and seemed more ruthless than the usual exaggeration of “trying to kill each other” in the cage.

It also included suggestions that Bowery’s wife, Julie, had attempted to communicate with McGregor through a direct message over the Internet.

Pourier said after the fight that MacGregor’s death-threatening words persisted even as medical staff dealt with his broken leg, and that the new angle launched online may back that up.

While some of what MacGregor is saying is difficult to articulate due to the crowd noise and the beginning of Poirier’s interview with Joe Rogan in the cage, McGregor appears to be shouting to Poirier, “In your sleep, you get it… In your sleep, you get it… In your sleep, you get it.. It’s not over yet.”

A Twitter post with the video claims that McGregor also said “You and your wife are dead,” referring to Julie Poirier, though the noise in the arena makes it hard to know for sure.

One thing is for sure, that Pourier spoke about McGregor’s words in his post-fight press conference and suggested that there were footage that might not paint McGregor very well.

“Listen, Connor said some bad things that didn’t work out at (UFC) Embedded,” Pourier told MMA Junkie after the fight. “Maybe when this fight takes place behind the scenes, you’ll see him on the floor still saying some real bad things. But even those things that have been said, I wish no grave harm like this to anyone.

“The man has children. I want him to come home safely to his family. I pray before these fights. Every time before I cross the octagonal door I pray – not for a win – I pray that we both get out of this safe, because I know what I’m going to try Do it and I know what he will try to do to me.”

Pourier also told UFC sideline correspondent Megan Olivier on ESPN after the fight that McGregor continued to make death threats in the cage.

“Earlier this week he was saying he’s going to kill me and I’m not going home and things like that,” Pourier said. “That’s what really bothered me this week. Even when he was sitting on the floor, leg broken, he was looking at me (raising gun marks on the head) like, ‘I’m going to kill you.’ Like, what’s wrong with you brother? This is a sport. This is a fight. We can We hate each other, but you don’t say sh*t like that…. I don’t play that kind of game.”

McGregor underwent surgery on Sunday for his broken leg and said the diagnosis includes six weeks on crutches, after which time he plans to return to training for a comeback. Pourier likely struck his ticket to a championship against lightweight champion Charles Oliveira.
