A TV news photographer has died in the country of Georgia after being brutally attacked by a far-right mob protesting a gay pride parade, his employer says.
Alexander Lashkarav, 37, who worked for independent TV station Perveli, was found dead in his bed early Sunday after being violently beaten in the former Soviet capital, Tbilisi, last week, the Guardian reported.
The platform reported that the photographer was among more than 50 journalists targeted by violent hate groups on July 5 to protest the upcoming Pride March before it was canceled due to safety concerns.
The newspaper reported that Lashkaraf suffered fractures in the bones of his face, although the cause of his death was not clear.

The Georgian Interior Ministry said an investigation had been opened into his death.
On Sunday, President Salome Zurabishvili said she had visited the Lashkarava family.
“What happened is a tragedy, and I send my condolences to the entire media community and to all of Georgia,” she wrote on Twitter. “They must be investigated, and those responsible must be punished.”

Critics accused Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili of encouraging hate groups, saying before the event was canceled that it was “unreasonable” due to security concerns.
Nodar Meladze, news editor at Perveli TV, accused the government of being behind violent attacks against journalists.
“The government not only encourages violence against journalists, but is part of the violence,” the newspaper reported.
