Conor McGregor’s coach, John Kavanagh, is unhappy to meet his fighter in the octagon after the UFC 264 main event.
McGregor (22-6 MMA, 10-4 UFC) suffered a broken leg at the end of the first round of his triplex bout with Dustin Poirier (28-6 MMA, 20-5 UFC) at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, ending the match before Time by TKO. It was a horrific injury that has since required extensive surgery, but “The Notorious” is already talking about his comeback plans.
Emotions were rising at night. Just minutes after McGregor collapsed onto the canvas, he was interviewed by UFC commentator Joe Rogan, who sat next to him in a corner of the octagon while the Irishman put a splint around his leg.
McGregor made waves with his comments. He promptly denied the finding while speaking to Rogan, then made some derogatory remarks about Bourier’s wife, Julie, which were met with a lot of negative feedback.

Kavanaugh, a longtime McGregor coach at SBG Ireland, is frustrated that McGregor was in a position to talk, and voiced it on Sunday during a Wimp 2 Warrior Instagram Live Q&A with Laura Sanko.
“His foot is literally dangling,” Kavanagh said. “It’s a clean break in the fibula and tibia. It went right in. It’s hanging off. You can just imagine the rush of hormones and what’s going on in your body at that moment. The pain – it was burning. Then someone bends over and sticks a microphone in your face: ‘How do you feel now?” It’s like, guys – come on.
“When was he never really generous in the end? Let’s go backstage, let’s get a proper evaluation by a doctor and let’s get an X-ray Let’s say I was so upset at the idea of shoving a microphone in someone’s face at that point. Let’s gather ourselves.”
McGregor doesn’t seem to have any regrets about the way the post-fight battle unfolded. He greatly doubled down in the aftermath of UFC 264, claiming after surgery that Poirier was on the verge of defeat before the injury ended the fight.
Kavanaugh agrees, and thinks McGregor was doing well before he collapsed.
“It was amazing,” Kavanagh said. “I thought it was looking really good in there. … I wasn’t worried at all. I was really really happy. … At the 4:30 mark or even the 4:45 mark (from Round 1), everything was brothy. I thought the energy It looks good, the technique looks good. A few tweaks between rounds, and I thought in the second round we were on track to get to the finish there, or keep the rhythm for the rest of the fight.”
