Climate change has caused sudden climatic changes on Earth, resulting in floods in many countries, especially the United States. But now, a new study has linked extreme weather events to the moon, Earth’s neighbor.
The study was conducted by the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), which says the ‘wobbles’ in the moon’s orbit combined with rising sea levels due to climate change will lead to devastating floods on Earth.
The study was published in the journal Nature Climate Change on June 21.
Dubbed “disturbing floods,” they currently occur in coastal areas when the tide reaches about 2 feet above the average daily high tide. These events are more problematic for businesses as they flood streets and homes, affecting daily life.
These disturbing floods will become more frequent and irregular by the mid-2030s, according to a NASA study. The majority of U.S. coasts will see a three to four times increase in tide rise for at least ten years, according to the study.
She also warned that these floods will not spread evenly during the year, and are expected to cluster together over just a few months.
“Low areas near sea level are increasingly vulnerable and suffering from increased flooding, and things are only going to get worse,” said Bill Nelson, NASA Administrator. “The combination of the moon’s gravity, rising sea levels, and climate change will continue to exacerbate coastal flooding on our coasts and around the world.”
Explaining the Moon’s effect on flooding on Earth, study lead author Phil Thompson, associate professor at the University of Hawaii, said that the oscillation in the Moon’s orbit takes 18.6 years to complete. While the oscillation has always existed, Thompson said, what makes it dangerous is that it will combine with rising sea levels due to the planet’s warming.
In half of these 18.6 years, the Earth’s regular tides were suppressed: high tides are lower than normal and low tides higher than normal. In the other half, the effect is reversed, which is called the tidal amplification phase on the moon. According to Thompson, the next cycle is expected to be in the 1930s, which will severely affect normal life, especially in coastal areas.
