Retired NASA astronaut Nicole Stott told CNBC’s “The News with Shepard Smith” that the successful first fully manned Virgin Galactic test flight into suborbital space on Sunday will have a major impact on the commercial space race.
“I think it’s going to be huge,” Stott said. “We’re at it, well, we’re just over the edge like they did yesterday, and I think it’s going to accelerate from here.”
The company’s spacecraft, VSS Unity, blasted into the skies over New Mexico, with two pilots driving the vehicle carrying billionaire founder Sir Richard Branson and three Virgin Galactic employees. It was a milestone in the commercial space race and a step toward its goal of commercial service in 2022.
Host Shepherd Smith asked Stott what she thought of the critics who said Branson hadn’t really gone into space, because his flight was suborbital. The veteran NASA astronaut, who has spent 104 days living and working in space, noted that the agency is looking at space 50 miles above the Earth’s surface. She added, “I guess we have better things to argue about, right?”
