COVID-19 cases rise in US amid declining vaccination rates

Covid-19 cases have risen in more than 40 US states over the past week as the rate of vaccination slows and the spread of the highly contagious Delta variant continues.

Xinhua reported that the country recorded an average of about 19,455 new cases over the past seven days, an increase of 47 percent from the previous week, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.

It marks the biggest weekly rise since April 2020, according to a Bloomberg report.

More than 99 percent of COVID-19 deaths in the United States in June were among unvaccinated people, said Rochelle Walinsky, director of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

In addition, preliminary data indicates that over the past six months, nearly all of the COVID-19 deaths in various states have occurred in people who are not immunized, she said.

The frequency of vaccinations in the country has also fallen sharply in the past few months. About 246,000 people began vaccinating each day over the past week, down 88 percent from the peak in April, and about 278,000 people were fully vaccinated each day over the past week, down 84 percent from the peak in April, according to CDC data.

About 48 percent of the US population has been fully vaccinated against COVID-19, and 55.5 percent of the population has received at least one shot as of Sunday, according to CDC data.

Experts said COVID-19 vaccines are key to managing the spread and preventing variants from turning into more serious forms.

“We really need to vaccinate more people, because that’s the solution,” Anthony Fauci, the White House’s chief medical advisor, said Monday. “This virus, in fact, will be protected from the vaccine.”
