Google is rolling out a redesign of its dedicated Lens app on Android that significantly reduces focus on the live viewfinder. Instead, the focus is now on analyzing the images and screenshots contained in the camera roll.
This Google Lens redesign sees a tap of the Home screen icon — available by downloading an “App” from the Play Store — open to a brand new view. The top third of this screen belongs to the “Search with Camera” section which shows a live preview. You can either scroll down or tap to access the previous user interface inspired by the Google Camera, which has one small dial showing a preview of your gallery in the lower right corner. One beautiful design detail sees the bottom corners curved.
Next on this page is a 4×2 grid of recent “screenshots” with “view all” in the top-right corner to open up a full page grid of screenshots. All Photos below include your camera roll and can be scrolled infinitely.
This change represents an interesting start for Google Lens, but at the same time it might be a bit of a simplification. Google Lens always focuses on “live” analysis after seeing something in the real world. However, after being around for several years, Google could come to the conclusion that if people saw something interesting in the real world, they would take a picture first for posterity. In the past, you could not save an image from Google Lens.
However, if people take a photo for the first time, a wiser workflow would be to take the shot and then use the Google Lens integration built into some of the first-party camera apps. On Pixel phones, press and hold the viewfinder until a circle of four colors appears. If this becomes the intended behavior, the Google Lens app on your home screen should be redesigned.
While screenshot analysis is already done easily with the Google Photos app, having a customized experience that displays a screenshot quickly and provides one-click analysis would be even better.
We’re experiencing this Lens redesign in Google app version 12.26 after a server-side update. This change is currently available on Android, not iOS.
