Ted Lasso’s ‘Queen’s Gambit’ Compete for Emmy Nominations

LOS ANGELES (AP) — “The Crown” and “Ted Lasso,” among the TV shows that helped distract America during the year of the oppressive pandemic, are in a bid for an Emmy Award.

Nominations for the Primetime Emmy Awards will be announced on Tuesday by father and daughter actors Ron Cephas Jones (“This Is Us”) and Jasmine Cephas Jones (“Blindspotting”), and Academy Television CEO Frank Sherma.

In its fourth season, British royal drama “The Crown” approaches contemporary events with its version of the courtship and rocky marriage of Prince Charles and Diana Spencer, performed by Josh O’Connor and Emma Corinne.

The actors are among the favorites for Emmy nods, along with Olivia Colman as Queen Elizabeth II and Gillian Anderson as Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.

For Netflix, which has led the way for the emergence of streaming services but is yet to claim the biggest streak of awards, The Crown may be his best bet. It has been nominated three times before.

“Ted Lasso,” a heartwarming comedy about a mid-sized American soccer coach suddenly imported to England to take over a soccer team, could prey on star nominations Jason Sudeikis and cast members including Hannah Waddingham and Nick Muhammad.

Among the contenders in the miniseries category are “The Queen’s Gambit” with co-star Anya Taylor-Joy as a troubled chess prodigy, and “The Underground Subway,” based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by writer Colson Whitehead and created by the Academy Award-winning director. Barry Jenkins (“Moonlight”).

Thoso Mbedo and Aaron Bier, who star in the haunting depiction of American slavery combined with elements of magical realism, are potential candidates.

“Lovecraft Country,” which tells the story of mid-20th century racism with elements of horror, has been honored in the drama series despite its cancellation by HBO after one season.

“The Mandalorian” and “WandaVision” are among the contested science fiction and fantasy shows.

Among the shows also vying for an Emmy are hit shows that have boasted movie stars, including crime series “Mary of Easttown” with Kate Winslet and “Undo” with Nicole Kidman and Hugh Grant.

Academy of Television voters have a chance to build on the inclusiveness of last year’s acting nominations, which included a record number of black nominees — 35 — out of 102 contenders for main, supporting, and guest performances in drama, comedy, limited series or television movies.

In just over 34% of the nominees, that record improved for 2018, just under 28% of black representatives in those categories. Voters also have the chance to get to know other actors of color, including Rosie Perez in the comedy “The Flight Attendant” and trans-actors Mj Rodriguez and Angelica Ross for “Pose.”

The September 10 concert, held roughly last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, will be broadcast on CBS from the stage and will feature a limited audience of nominees and guests. The host is Cedric the Entertainer.
