CHICAGO – A man apparently ambushed after his release from Chicago’s Cook County Jail, police said, was shot with up to 64 bullets in the head and other parts of his body.
A police report said Saturday night’s shooting killed 31-year-old Launder Sylvester. He was pronounced dead in hospital.
NBC Chicago reported that the victim was a local rapper who went by the stage name KTS Dre.
Police report Sylvester has just been released after he was set up for electronic monitoring and was walking into a waiting car when “several suspects got out of two separate vehicles and all started shooting at Sylvester, hitting him several times.”
The murder comes amid a surge in shootings this year in Chicago and broader nationwide fears of increased violence. On Monday, Chicago Police Chief David Brown met with city leaders and law enforcement from across the United States with President Joe Biden about efforts to reduce crime.
Police said that after the shooting on Saturday night, the suspects returned to their cars and fled the scene.
Police said a 60-year-old woman who was with Sylvester was shot in one of her knees and was taken to hospital in good condition. Police said another woman in her 30s sustained a cut to her mouth.
The Chicago Tribune reported that Sylvester posted a $5,000 bond on Friday. He was ordered to be held on $50,000 bail on July 1 after prosecutors beat him last month with a plea for breach of bail for allegedly failing to meet the terms of his release in a 2020 firearms felony case.
