Flake, a longtime Republican member of the House and Senate, has emerged as a Biden supporter after becoming one of former President Donald Trump’s most vocal critics. He is a former member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee and the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
The President is also nominating Kent Logsdon, a professional foreign service officer, as ambassador to Moldova.
Many high-ranking ambassadorial positions across Europe, Asia and beyond are under intense scrutiny. The president has preferred candidates for several positions, but others remain open.
All candidates will face Senate confirmation.
In a statement, Flick said he was honored and fought for his choice.
“If confirmed by the Senate, I would be happy to join a strong, experienced, and capable team that represents the interests of the United States abroad. Having served in both the House and Senate, I understand and appreciate the role Congress plays in American foreign policy,” Flick said in a statement. We look forward to that partnership.”
He added, “With this nomination, the Biden administration is reasserting the best tradition of American foreign policy and diplomacy: the doctrine that partisan politics must stop at the water’s edge. United States foreign policy can and should be bipartisan. This is also my belief, and my commitment.”
