Conservative radio host Larry Elder formally launched his impeachment challenge to California Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom Tuesday, declaring “We have a country to save” and adding a nationally known name to the race to replace the embattled politician.
“People are tired,” the 69-year-old attorney told Fox News in an afternoon phone call. “2.2 million people signed this petition, which means that a lot of Democrats and a lot of Independents who voted for this guy have changed their minds.”
Newsom won the election for the first time in 2018 by an overwhelming majority. But since then, devastating bushfires, power outages, a pandemic and an uptick in violent crime have rattled voters.

Elder, a native of south-central Los Angeles, criticized Newsom as being too far removed from the needs and desires of Californians.
Meanwhile, the governor has blamed the impeachment effort on white nationalists and supporters of former President Donald Trump.
“Gavin Newsom is trying to describe this race as a race against him and against a group of pro-Trump white nationalists,” Elder said. “Now you’ve seen me on TV…Do I look like a white nationalist?”
Newsom has been criticized for his handling of the coronavirus pandemic, especially the closing of businesses and the reopening of schools, as well as concerns about water and electricity shortages. He even had to declare a state of emergency during a severe heat wave last month just so residents could use their own generators to power their air conditioners due to state laws.
Newsom also angered many critics after he was pictured with a group of high-profile medical lobbyists at Tony’s restaurant, apparently violating his COVID-19 safety protocols.
Critics, including Elder, are frustrated with his efforts on education, unemployment and the economy and say California lags behind in those areas.
“We basically pay people for not working, and entrepreneurs are complaining about it,” Elder said. “He’s not listening.”
And last month, NPR revealed that the governor had taken about $150 million from the state’s forest management program even as the threat of wildfires flared.
“I’m starting to look at this guy’s arrogance, how he put down these tough coronavirus-related mandates, the most ruthless in the entire country – while his kids were still enjoying in school a special education,” he told Fox News in an afternoon phone. communicate. “He was in that French Laundry [restaurant] With the people who wrote and crafted the mandates that they both violated by not social distancing, not wearing masks, showing you that they weren’t really afraid [of the virus]. “
He argued that Newsom “is totally beholden” to the teachers’ union and does nothing to try and raise the bar for the state’s beleaguered police force as major crime in the city escalates up and down the coast.
He also said the governor’s plans to address homelessness do nothing to address the root causes — which include mental health problems and substance abuse.
Elder sees the Golden State’s homelessness crisis, rising crime rates, and a young exodus of residents and businesses as signs of mismanagement on behalf of the state’s first governor.
He said California is not what it used to be.
In 1945, shortly after the end of World War II, his father left the Marine Corps and moved to Los Angeles, where he got two jobs and was able to buy a house and raise a family.
“If someone works three full-time jobs as a janitor [today]He said, “A dropout from eighth grade can’t do what my father did. That’s how high the cost of living is.”
He blamed an abundance of state regulations, high taxes and a housing shortage for the high cost of living.
Gavin News Won’t Be Listed as Democrat in California Next Pull Vote
As a result, he said, people are packing up and moving to lower-regulated states like Florida, Texas and Tennessee. And last year was the first time in state history that more people left California than moved there
“This is a man, Gavin Newsom, who has turned his back on the average citizen of California,” Elder said. “There is a war against the middle class, a war against the working class. This man kept his winery open while he was closing other businesses.”

Newsom has a huge advantage in fundraising and has already been accused of trying to “buy votes” by other competitors in the fundraising process due to its use of corporate donations for coronavirus relief.
So Elder encourages people from all over the country to visit his site, electelder.com, and support the campaign.

“Why should someone outside California care? Because like in Washington, D.C., we have a Democratic leader, both houses of the legislature are controlled by Democrats, and we have supermajors running the Senate and our House,” he said. “Republicans don’t even need to show up, look up what happened to the state. So the way California is going, the way the rest of the country is going — coming to a theater near you if we don’t do something about going around California.”
Elder hosts a nationally syndicated radio show, “The Larry Elder Show,” and is a graduate of the University of Michigan Law School. He is also a regular guest on Fox News.
Joining a Republican field includes former San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer, 2018 Republican nominee John Cox, State Assemblyman Kevin Kelly, former Olympian Caitlin Jenner and former police officer Steve Chavez Lodge, and fiancé of “Real Housewives” star Vicki Gunvalson.
Elder says he doesn’t run against any of them – just Newsom.

“I want to be the one who gets the most votes, but all of us, all Republicans, are on target,” he said. “The villain here is Gavin Newsom, his arrogance of making his kids enjoy school and private education while closing it off to everyone else, and having his winery stay open while other people’s business is closed.”
The Newsom campaign did not immediately respond to a Fox News request for comment.
Despite dozens of attempts to summon the governor of California, such a move succeeded only once before – in 2003, Republican Arnold Schwarzenegger ousted Democrat Gray Davis.
