Greg Abbott, a Texas Republican, took to Twitter late Tuesday to blame President Biden for intentionally spreading “disinformation” about the state’s sweeping election reform bill.
Biden, who was in Old Town Philadelphia, on Tuesday rebuked the bill in no uncertain terms. He said supporters of election security are participating in the “21st century attack on Jim Crow.”
Biden’s comments came a day after Democrats moved from Texas to Washington in an attempt to deny the Republican-controlled legislature the quorum needed to pass a bill that places new limits on voting in the state.
Here’s what you need to know about the draft election law
Abbott, who told Fox News that Democrats who fled the state face arrest upon return, insisted that the Texas bill “makes voting easier and cheats more difficult.”
There seems to be no love lost between Abbott and the President. Abbott begins the video by recalling the time Biden linked “Neanderthal thinking” to ending the state’s mask mandates. He said the president was wrong then and he’s wrong again
“Once again, President Biden is ignoring the facts,” Abbott said. “The fact is, Texas is passing a law that extends — not reduces — early voting hours. That’s more than many states, including President Biden’s home state of Delaware, have zero hours of early voting.”
He said the law would help prevent mail-in ballot fraud in the state and “will maintain the integrity of our elections and ensure that Texas entitled to vote by mail will be able to do so.”
The Texas Senate approved an election reform bill on Tuesday, but the legislation stalled due to a lack of quorum in the House of Representatives.
Rep. Chris Turner, the Democrats’ leader in the Texas House of Representatives, said their efforts will ultimately be futile unless congressional Democrats take bolder action to overcome the Senate’s Republican blockade of sweeping federal voting law.
“We can’t hold back this tide forever,” Turner said. “We are buying time. We need Congress and all of our federal leaders to use that time wisely.”
