“I have a lot of respect for him”

During a round of the American Celebrity Golf Championship, Patrick Mahomes enjoyed with fans at Lake Tahoe.

At one point, he told a sign-connected patron in Kansas City, “Watch out for Justin Herbert next year.”

“I’ll see him when I believe him,” Mahomes replied sarcastically and smiling.

As with most things uttered from the half-billion-dollar quarterback’s mouth, the clip went viral, showing Mahomes taking a shot at his West Asian rival and 2020 Player of the Year winner.

(We’ll put aside, for now, Mahomes accidentally (?) flips the phrase. He probably just subscribes to the Santa Claus ideology where, “Vision is incredible. Faith sees.” Profound things, Patrick.)

During a Tuesday phone interview with Jori Epstein of USA TODAY Sports, Mahomes clarified his comments, noting that he wasn’t supposed to hit the Chargers quarterback but was just a harmless talk with some fans.

“Yes, I think it was taken out of context,” Mahomes told Epstein. “I was talking about some rubbish for all the Raiders, Broncos and Chargers fans. I have a lot of respect for him as a player.”

Herbert enjoyed one of the best seasons ever for a rookie QB. In 15 starts, the Chargers QB threw 31 TDs to 10 INTs and set a rookie pass record with 4,336 yards. Herbert’s ability to stand up to pressure and still bring down the dimes was another matter after he was forced to act in the second week against Mahomes’ chiefs.
