Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro was taken to hospital complaining of abdominal pain after having a series of hiccups that lasted for more than 10 days.

Bolsonaro, 66, was reportedly taken to a military hospital in the capital, Brasilia, around 4 a.m. on Wednesday, where a prominent Brazilian journalist claimed the president had a bowel obstruction.

In a brief statement, the presidency said Bolsonaro is in good spirits and working well but will remain under surveillance for up to 48 hours. Tests have been performed to investigate the cause of the hiccups.

Folha de São Paulo newspaper reported that Antonio Luis Macedo, the surgeon who operated on Bolsonaro after he was stabbed shortly before his 2018 election, was on his way to hospital.
