The official Apple MagSafe Battery Pack has arrived nine months after the iPhone 12 lineup debuted with a handy magnetic function. And earlier in the year, two of the most compelling MagSafe-compatible battery packs to launch were Mophie’s Snap + Juice Pack Mini (reviewed) and the Anker PowerCore Magnetic 5K (reviewed).

All three of these MagSafe battery options have their own unique design. Away from previous smart battery cases, Apple’s MagSafe Battery Pack is only available in white, but of course it comes with the company’s signature seamless silicone design.

Mophie uses a clean dark gray canvas and black bezel design, while Anker uses simple black stretchy plastic. For I/O, these two powerful third-party options use USB-C while Apple uses Lightning.

At $99 compared to ~$50, read on for all the pros and cons to see if Apple has enough advantages over Mophie and Anker to make it worth the premium.

Well, this is a bit messy for several reasons. First, Apple doesn’t share any guidelines on how much extra iPhone 12 battery to expect, such as no estimate. But we’ll start with what we expect to see (actual numbers from Mophie and Anker shown in the graph and our estimates for the MagSafe Battery Pack from Apple). Keep reading below for the finer details.

So how did we arrive at the above Apple estimates? Apple shared the initial specs for the MagSafe Battery Pack, but it could be misunderstood at a glance. It might be easier to look at the Wh rating (watt-hour) to more easily compare these batteries and the charge they will provide for the iPhone 12 set

Since Apple uses twice the voltage of Mophie and Anker, they suggest using two 1460mAh cells, which puts the true mAh capacity around 2,920. Another factor to consider is that Apple may have a higher efficiency (maybe around 70%) when It is about transmitting power wirelessly.

So although 11.13Wh compared to 18.5Wh for the iMovie and Anker seems noticeably lower, the variance in the expected amount of charge may not be significant due to the efficiency differences.

For reference, iPhone 12 mini has an 8.57Wh battery, iPhone 12/Pro has a 10.75Wh battery, and iPhone 12 Pro Max has a 14.13Whr battery. This means that Mophie and Anker batteries have a wireless transmission efficiency of about 60% based on the charges they provide.

Based on Apple’s 11.13Wh rating for the MagSafe Battery Pack and assuming its efficiency is closer to 70%, this means a full charge for the iPhone 12 mini, about 75% for the iPhone 12/Pro, and about 50% for the iPhone 12 Pro Max.

Mophie and Anker will probably provide 25% more power to any iPhone 12.

Charging speed

It was interesting to see top brands like Mophie and Anker skip the official MagSafe label, but these details may explain why — even Apple’s MagSafe Battery Pack offers only 5W wireless charging on the go.

As explained in an Apple support document, the only way to get 15W fast charging with an Apple battery pack is to use it when it’s plugged in. This means that there is not much difference between official MagSafe and compatible MagSafe here.

So what sets Apple’s MagSafe battery pack apart from Mophie and Anker? The iOS integration and automation are probably the most valuable features.

When you attach the Apple MagSafe Battery Pack, it automatically starts charging your iPhone 12, with the charging status shown on the lock screen. You can also find shipment status icons in today view and home screen widgets.

Interestingly, Apple offers two ways to use transshipment. You can plug a 20W power adapter into the MagSafe Battery Pack, and it will charge both the pack and your iPhone 12. Or you can connect it via the iPhone 12’s Lightning port which will charge your smartphone, and the MagSafe Battery Pack via reverse wireless charging.

However, one positive thing that Mophie and Anker does not have is the wired input and output via USB-C, which gives more flexibility for charging other devices.

Also, you can use the Qi wireless pad found in Mophie and Anker battery packs to charge any Qi-enabled device; You just don’t get MagSafe alignment and security. It is not yet clear if Apple will support this functionality or if the MagSafe Battery Pack will only work when connected to the iPhone 12.

Apple hasn’t shared the dimensions of its MagSafe Battery Pack at this point, but based on the images, it looks like Apple will fall between the smaller Anker footprint with a thicker design and Mophie’s larger footprint with a thinner design.

It looks like the Mophie will be the slimmest option here as it’s just under half an inch in size.
