Johnson & Johnson recalls Neutrogena and Aveeno sunscreens from US stores after benzene, a potentially cancer-causing chemical, was detected in some samples.
J&J said Wednesday that consumers should stop using spray sunscreens and throw them away. The company said it had told distributors and retailers to stop selling the products and to arrange for the products to be returned.
A company spokesperson said efforts would include removing products from shelves.
The New Brunswick, NJ, company said it does not use gasoline in the manufacture of its spray sunscreens and is investigating the cause of the contamination. The company did not say whether the refund would also affect other countries.
J&J, one of the world’s largest sellers of consumer health products by sales, did not say how many bottles were affected and what exact gasoline levels were, although J&J said the levels are low and not expected to cause health problems.
J&J said the affected spray products are sold as Neutrogena Beach Defense sunscreens, Neutrogena Cool Dry Sport, Neutrogena Invisible Daily, Neutrogena Ultra Sheer and Aveeno Protect + Refresh.
“Out of a lot of caution, we’re recalling every lot of our aerosol sunscreen products,” the company said.
Benzene is a chemical that can cause cancer after high levels of exposure. Higher levels of exposure can have more immediate effects, including dizziness, confusion, and a fast or irregular heartbeat.
