Cheered by a crowd of supporters from abroad, Britney Spears scored a victory in court on Wednesday that could be the first step in ending her sentence. It was another emotional day as the singer burst into tears, telling Judge Brenda Penny that she was “too afraid” of her father, Jimmy Spears, and accused him of “abusing guardianship”.
Penny will allow Britney’s coveted replacement attorney, former federal prosecutor Matthew Rosengart, to represent the singer going forward. The 39-year-old hasn’t been able to choose her own lawyer since the county’s inception in 2008 — which is why Wednesday’s decision is such a big deal. Rosengart’s first job application once formally incorporated is expected to be to attempt to oust Jamie Spears.
“I’m here to get rid of my dad and accuse him of guardianship abuse,” Britney stated over the phone, according to NBC News. The “Slave 4 U” singer said she wanted to investigate her father and that “this guardianship allowed my father to ruin my life.”
Britney detailed how Jamie took control of everything, from her diet to making her work 70 hours a week. The singer said that she is afraid of him, which is why she does not want to be evaluated for his removal.
“Their goal was to make me crazy, which I am not,” she said. “And that’s not good.”
According to CNN, Britney called the tutelage “cruel” and said, “If this isn’t abuse, I don’t know what it is.”
She allegedly told the court, “I thought they were trying to kill me.”
It looks like Britney’s new lawyer is ready to take on the challenge. Rosengart spoke to the press after the hearing and called for Jimmy to voluntarily step down as her governor, saying it was in his new client’s “best interest”.
He told reporters outside the courtroom, via CNN, “We will move quickly and aggressively for his removal. The question remains, why is he involved? He should step down voluntarily because it is in the governor’s best interest.”
The story continues
Rosengart described Britney’s testimony as “clear, pure, powerful and compelling,” and praised her “courage” in speaking to court.
“My company and I will be taking a top-down look at what has happened over the past decade,” Rosengart added.
Rosengart is a partner in the well-known Greenberg Traurig and has represented such notables as Sean Penn, Steven Spielberg and Kenneth Lonergan. Penn, who won a libel case thanks to Rosengart, told the New York Times that it’s “as tough as a street fighter with a big mind and bigger principles.”
Britney’s court-appointed lawyer, Samuel Ingham, filed papers requesting the release of her strong statement three weeks ago in which she called guardianship “abusive” and convicted those involved. He’s not the only main character in Regency who has resigned.
The Bessemer Trust, the wealth management group set to take over as Britney’s co-owner with Jamie, has asked to resign. The company said it was told that the artist’s guardianship was voluntary – something it made clear is not the case – and said it “respects her wishes”. Britney’s longtime manager, Larry Rudolph, quit after he was clearly among the people she wasn’t happy with.
Britney said to the judge as she insisted, “Ma’am, my father, and anyone involved in this guardianship, and my administrator, who played such a large part in punishing me when I said no—ma’am, they should be in prison.” Testimony of June 23.
After Wednesday’s ruling, Spears was ecstatic. She shared shots of her “celebrating” by doing wheels and horseback riding, and thanked fans for their support.
