Representative Matt Gaetz thinks Jimmy Spears is more ferocious, and in his candid words, “Dick.”
The Florida Republican said that outside Britney Spears’ guardianship hearing Wednesday in downtown Los Angeles, to continue pushing for guardianship reform that he and Representative Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) began in March.
Gates took the microphone at the #FreeBritney rally gathered near the Stanley Musk courthouse while lawyers and others involved in the custody of 13-year-old Spears appeared before Judge Brenda J. Penny.
There have been a number of petitions emerging after Spears’ testimony last month, as well as the 39-year-old’s request that she be allowed to choose and hire her personal attorney.
“Every time there is a hearing in this case that does not result in the freedom of Britney Spears and the dissolution of this guardianship, it is a black eye on the American justice system,” Gates said.
“There were frivolous people in the process who tried to act as if they talked to Britney, and they know what she wants. Well, now the whole world knows what Britney Spears wants, and the freedom and liberty that should be given to every American.”
Gates then argued that people needed to band together to enforce federal law on guardianship and change guardianship to “liberate Britney and the millions of Americans affected by a corrupt guardianship system that empowers people to care for the weak”.
He added: “Britney was abused by the media, abused by a grieving father, abused by the American justice system.
“There is a lot that still separates us, but one thing we can all agree on is that Jimmy Spears is Dick, and he should. [not be able to] “Make any other decisions about his daughter.” “She is about 40 years old. She has to make her own decisions, but you know what, this case should open our eyes to the broader abuse that is taking place in this system.”
Spears’ guardianship has been in place since 2008. Her father was removed from the position of guardianship over her person in 2019, but he remains in charge of her property. He was supposed to be a partner in custody with the Bessemer Trust, but the financial firm recently announced that it was leaving the job – which apparently didn’t really start – after Britney said she wanted to get out of custody.
Her court-appointed lawyers also submitted their resignations, and Matthew Rosengart of the law firm Greenberg Traurig LLP was reportedly arguing Wednesday that she should be allowed to choose her own lawyer: he.
Meanwhile, Gates is under investigation for allegations of sex trafficking and having an affair with a 17-year-old girl. Amid a sprawling federal investigation, former Gaetz aide Joel Greenberg pleaded guilty to sex trafficking charges in May.
Those controversies were not lost on some #FreeBritney advocates, who wondered aloud on Twitter if Gaetz’s support was welcome and helpful to their cause.
“Pathetic way of trying to redeem yourself, riding on Britney’s trouble coats being played in public,” one user replied to Gaetz’s comment, “Thanks to the #FreeBritney Army! I will always fight by your side for a fairer America.”
Another commentator wrote: “We don’t want you near us.”
In March, shutting down the news in the Spears case, Gates and Jordan sent a letter to House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler (DNY) inviting him to hold a hearing on the provinces.
“The facts and circumstances that led to it [Britney Spears] “The arrangement remains disputed but involves questionable motives and legal tactics by her father and current Representative Jimmy Spears,” the congressmen wrote in their letter.
“Given the constitutional freedoms at stake and the ambiguity of these arrangements, our committee should hold a hearing to examine whether Americans were unjustly trapped in the provinces,” she added.
