A new report claims that TV and movie streaming giant Netflix may offer video games as part of its subscription early next year.
According to Bloomberg, a person “familiar with the situation” stated that video games may appear “within the next year,” where they will be available alongside the service’s existing content as a new, standalone genre. Apparently, Netflix has no plans to charge any additional fees for the video game content offered, which likely means that existing subscribers will be able to access the games without the need for additional steps.
The report indicates that Netflix has hired Electronic Arts and Oculus veteran Mike Verdo as its vice president of game development. Previously, Verdu served as Vice President of Facebook and was responsible for helping developers bring their games to the Oculus VR platform.
The idea of Netflix adding games to its service is of course not new; Reports surrounding the possibility first surfaced in May, and the company itself has expressed that it is “excited to do more with interactive entertainment.” We’ve also seen Netflix properties pop up on Switch, like Stranger Things 3: The Game – but will these games end up exclusively on Netflix from now on?
Are you a Netflix subscriber? Would you welcome games into the service? How do you think such a thing could affect Nintendo, Xbox Game Pass, or other areas of the gaming world? Share your thoughts with us in the comments.
